Wandiyali is a Newcastle-based Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisation. Our services operate throughout Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Hunter Region and Port Stephens.

Each year Wandiyali assists hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members through the delivery of its many services.

The aim of Wandiyali and its services is to ‘Keep our Culture Strong’. We do this by focusing our services on children, families, strength, culture and community.

Job Description

The aim of Wandiyali and its services is to ‘Keep our Culture Strong’. As a Wandi PSP Foster Care Caseworker, you will do this by focusing on providing client-focused case management to children and young people while they are in care, through a Cultural lens. With the goal of working towards restoration.
To support you in achieving meaningful casework, you will form part of a casework team of 7, led by a PSP Foster Care Casework Coordinator and caseloads being maintained at 10 or less. You will also be supported via in-house specialist teams including,  
•    Carers support caseworkers
•    Cultural Caseworkers 
•    Reportable Conduct Officers 
•    Casework Specialist
As a Wandi Caseworker, you also benefit with additional career development supports including,   
•    12 weeks induction training 
•    Monthly professional supervision, 
•    Bi-monthly external Cultural supervision, and
•    Ongoing training and opportunities for career advancement.


Wandiyali supports all employees to maintain their family connections and wellbeing through 
•    5 weeks of annual leave.   
•    Option to take 1 day of flex leave per month, and 
•    Time off in leu arrangements

Desired Skills and Experience

Essential criteria;

  • A commitment to the Vision, Mission, and Values of our Organisation.
  • Aboriginal or/and Torres Strait Islander, or Culturally confident and able to demonstrate their knowledge and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the community.
  • Relevant qualifications and experience working with Children and Young People in the statutory care system.
  • Sound understanding of the developmental needs of children and young people, families and parents and a comprehensive understanding of key risk factors of trauma on childhood development.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging and working with children and young people.
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise, advocate with and maintain positive working relationships with relevant government and non- government professionals, community groups, services, and agencies.
  • Demonstrated time management and reflective practice skills in a busy environment with many competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated effective communication including active listening and negotiation skills to manage conflicts and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Demonstrated experience in written communication that is appropriate to the audience and report writing skills.
  • Intermediate level of computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate positively in teamwork, training, and supervision processes.
