Wandiyali is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation, established in Newcastle in 1997. We are the largest accredited Aboriginal provider of PSP OOHC within Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Hunter Region, and Port Stephens. Wandiyali also has a number of Preservation Programs and support services that work closely with children, young people and families.

Job Description

The Opportunity

Please note we are currently recruiting for a 6-month fixed-term position.

Wontaring means “Where to?” in Awabakal language.

The Wontaring Hunter Koori Youth program previously known as Going Home Staying Home, targets Aboriginal young people between the ages of 16 and 24 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

It provides client centered, Culturally appropriate homelessness support, including prevention and early intervention, rapid rehousing, crisis and transitional accommodation, and intensive responses for up to 199 Aboriginal young people with complex needs or Aboriginal young people leaving care or other institutions.

Please note a current WWCC, National Police Check (completed in the last 12 months), First Aid certificate including CPR, and a current Driver's License (P2 or above) is required prior to the successful applicant's start date.

Desired Skills and Experience

Essential criteria;

An applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification and authorised by Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.

  • A commitment to the Vision, Mission and Values of our organisation
  • Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • Tertiary qualifications diploma or Cert IV in a relevant discipline (Community Services; Youth Work, Case Management etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability engaging and working with vulnerable young people
  • Demonstrated case management skills which includes developing individualised support plans and referral to other services
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the legal system and competence to support clients appropriately
  • The ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with other services our community and attend local network events
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a busy team and be self-motivated.
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to maintain confidentiality and accountability, including client records, team and organisational discussions
  • Demonstrated ability to participate positively in teamwork, training, and supervision processes.
  • Proven effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in appropriate record keeping, report writing and working within a data base
  • Alibility and willingness to implement appropriate and respectful conflict resolution strategies within the community and working environment.
